Primary Teaching for Mastery

Primary Teaching for Mastery Year Group is ongoing and schools participate year on year. This Work Group is intended for all schools who have participated in a TfM Work Group for at least two years. All schools in this Work Group will continue to work alongside other schools to embed and refine teaching for mastery approaches in their school to benefit all pupils. This group will develop their understanding and leadership practice through collaborating with others and engaging in core activities such as observing teaching for mastery in live lessons. There will also be the opportunity for schools to choose from a list of focused themes for implementation of particular aspects of teaching for mastery, which are either resourced or are part of a Work Group’s involvement in Research & Innovation.

Secondary Teaching for Mastery

Secondary Teaching for Mastery is a flexible framework to support the 'enabler of change' in schools through structured opportunities for collaboration within and between departments. There will be one or more themes within these work groups appropriate for local context and needs.

In this work group participants and school departments will:

  • Have a deep understanding of practices aligned to those in the NCETM's Essence of Mathematics TFM
  • Understand the value of collaboration in creating a coherent curriculum in a culture of professional learning
  • Have a clear understanding of the leadership and management support required to enable them to effectively develop teaching for mastery approaches within their own departments
  • Understand the principles and practices behind the creation of a coherent and connected curriculum which promotes teaching for mastery
  • Understand the benefits of collaborative professional development.

Participants for this work group are ideally teachers in schools who have previously engaged in Secondary TFM, schools with secondary mastery specialist or those who have previously engaged with previous Development, Embedding or Sustaining Model.
