Developing A Level Pedagogy 

Register Your Interest HereThis project explores and deepens participants’ pedagogic content knowledge, empowering teachers to enhance their classroom practice and to influence department-wide A level teaching. It is an engine for improving student understanding of A level
 Maths, and driving their subsequent success.

Participants will work with local colleagues, supported by London Thames Maths Hub and the Advanced Mathematics Support Programme (AMSP), to enhance the quality of teaching and the conceptual understanding of students, and the development of participants as leaders of A level teaching professional development in their own school or college.

Participants will be established teachers or leaders of A level Maths who are looking to deepen their pedagogical understanding and lead the development of pedagogy in A level teaching with other colleagues. They must be teaching a current A level Maths group.

Time Commitment: 3 Full-day (09:30 - 15:30) Sessions

Developing Core Maths Pedagogy 

Register Your Interest HerePrimary focus: Core Maths pedagogy

This Work Group give teachers opportunities, through collaboration and experimentation, to develop improved teaching approaches that support the open-ended problem-solving skills Core Maths students need to develop, and to share these with departmental colleagues. Participant departments will support the role of Core Maths in promoting contextualised problem-solving and links to teaching in other subject areas.

This is for experienced and developing teachers of Core Maths who are in at least their second year of teaching Core Maths. Where appropriate, participants will be expected to work with colleagues in their own department. The Work Group focusses on collaborative discussion, planning, trialling ideas between sessions and evaluation.

New Teaching Core Maths Programme 

Register Your Interest HereFocus: Core Maths pedagogy

The purpose of this programme is to support teachers who are new to teaching Core Maths in developing specialist knowledge for teaching Core Maths and to increase their confidence in teaching the course.

The programme has a primary focus on Core Maths subject knowledge and pedagogy and will be based on these six key themes, which are common to all the Core Maths specifications:

  • Creating contextualised activities
  • Applying fermi estimation and modelling 
  • Developing critical analysis 
  • Making sense of finance 
  • Exploring statistics

Technology and online teaching will be underlying themes throughout the programme.

Higher Level Maths Achievement Work Group 

Register Your Interest HereThis is designed to help schools increase the number of students - particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds - achieving higher grades in GCSE Mathematics and progressing to study maths at Level 3.

Participants will work with local colleagues, supported by London Thames Maths Hub and the Advanced Mathematics Support Programme (AMSP), to explore strategies and teaching approaches that promote high attainment and motivation.

Sessions will include collaborative planning and reflection, with opportunities to adapt and trial high-impact tasks in the classroom to deepen understanding of challenging areas of the secondary maths curriculum.

Higher Level Maths Achievement Work Group (Embedding the Impact)

This community is open to all schools who participated in the 2025/26 Higher-level Maths Achievement Programme. All participating schools need to be engaged with the Higher-Level Maths Achievement Programme, and this may include a nominated teacher being part of a Higher-level Maths Achievement Work Group.

Participants will work collaboratively as part of an online community and work with their local Maths Hub. They will continue to explore the classroom materials and support colleagues to embed these in their practice where appropriate. They will continue to engage in the wider Higher-level Maths Achievement Programme, and attend study days with their students.

Regional Cross Phase ITT Providers Community

This project brings together ITT providers and Maths Hub leaders to form a regional professional learning community focused on enhancing maths provision and aligning it with the principles of teaching for mastery.

​​All DfE accredited ITT providers can nominate participants, who are responsible for leading maths provision. They will be joined by a representative from each Maths Hub’s leadership team. Participants are expected to attend all online and regional sessions and to share learning with colleagues

Middle Attainers at A - Level

This new national Research and Innovation Work Group offers the opportunity to contribute to the development of support for non-maths teachers who may go on to teach Core Maths. Participants will explore: How can teachers from other subjects build the mathematical understanding and pedagogy needed for effective Core Maths teaching?

The online Work Group brings together post-16 teachers from any non-maths subject who regularly use GCSE-level maths in their own teaching.
